It is very important that you report your claim to Cajun Underwriters as soon as a loss occurs. We want to quickly begin our process of helping you.
Once the claim is reported, you will be given a claim number. You should record this number and keep it in a safe place. This will help us quickly respond to your inquiries.
Next, your claim will be assigned to a claims adjuster. The assigned adjuster will contact you within 24 hours.
It is very important that you:
Protect your property against further damage.
Make temporary repairs and keep receipts for any repairs that you do make. Please do not make permanent repairs until the adjuster has had a chance to inspect the damage. If a water loss of any kind has occurred, it is important that you take immediate steps to stop the flow of water and dry out your home. If you need assistance in drying your home, Cajun Underwriters will provide the name of a company that will send a representative who will advise you, free of charge. You are, however, under no obligation to accept the services of that company.
- If you have experienced a theft, notify the police. Be sure to report to the police all items that have been stolen.
- If you have lost a credit card, be sure to report it to the credit card company immediately.
- Prepare a list of stolen or damaged property. As best you can, include the manufacturer, model name or number and place and date of purchase. If you have receipts, manuals or photographs of the lost or damaged items, gather them and make them available to your adjuster.
- Take photographs of any damage.
Should you have a loss to the interior of your home from a plumbing line, washing machine hose, dishwasher hose or other plumbing fixture or from an electrical item, save the item or part that caused the loss and show it to your adjuster.
Protect yourself and your family.
If you must move out of your home, keep all receipts for any temporary lodging and any other expenses you incur while out of your home.
The adjuster will contact you usually by telephone to obtain more details about your loss. If necessary, the adjuster will schedule a time to come to your home to inspect the loss, take photographs and obtain additional information.
Tips to prepare for your inspection
- Copy and label any photos of the loss
- Copy any repair invoices, original receipts, or expenses
- Safeguard any damaged items or equipment for inspection
- Verify mortgage info including loan number and address
- Keep in mind the adjuster will need full access to the property
- Safeguard access for the inspector (restrain any pets and notify the adjuster of any danger)
The adjuster cannot make any final determination of coverage or payments in the field. The adjuster will prepare a report of their inspection and submit it to the Cajun Underwriters examiners for review. If a payment is to be issued, the examiner will request it. A check, a copy of your estimate and a letter explaining the payment will be sent to you. If there is a question as to whether your loss is covered or if a payment will be made, an examiner will discuss it with you. You will receive a letter from Cajun Underwriters
Feel free to contact your claim examiner any time during the claim process.
